Day 1st: Athens
Arrival at Athens airport. Your car will be delivered at the airport and from there you would drive towards your hotel at the center of Athens. You may spend your time at leisure at the city. Observe the contrast of the modern city to the remains of the glorious past and discover the wonderful culture that made the city a center for the arts, learning and philosophy.
Your tour may start at the temple of Olympian Zeus, which forms the symbolic entrance to the city. Continuing, you will reach the ruins of the Asklepieion and from there the Odeion of Herodes Atticus which is nowadays the venue of the performances of Athens’ festival.
From there you walk up to the sacred rock of the Acropolis, the site of some of the most important masterpieces of worldwide architecture and art, the most renowned of which is the Parthenon temple. Only 300m away, is located the impressive new Acropolis Museum, one of the most important contemporary works of architecture in Athens.
If you are fond of museums, you may look around at Benakis’ museum, a private museum which hosts works from the Byzantine, the Islamic & the traditional epoque. It is the ideal place to enjoy home-made desserts or a glass of wine with Greek assortments at the veranda!
Days 2nd & 3rd: Skiathos Island
After breakfast, you will drive around 165 km away from Athens towards Agios Konstantinos port. The port connects the mainland with the islands of Northern Sporades. From Agios Konstantinos port, you will get in the ferry to Skiathos island. Skiathos is the most cosmopolitan island in the Northern Sporades, a true paradise on earth, with lush pine forests & crystal clear waters. The most famous beach in the island is Koukounaries, which has been declared the third most beautiful beach in Mediterranean!
The town’s most important landmark is its natural harbor, which has determined the destiny of the town for centuries. A stroll around the town’s paved streets reveals cute white houses with red tiled roofs and colourful gardens. The picturesque harbor surrounded by four small islets is a sight not to be forgotten. Not to miss the chance to visit Bourtzi, a small peninsula with lush vegetation where the ruins of a Venetian fortress still stand. There is also the Church of the Annunciation of Virgin Mary with its four museums and Kastro (meaning castle, a natural fortress that was used by the inhabitants in the 14th century as a refugee against pirate raids.
When you add in, its bustling nightlife it is only logical that the island attracts thousands of young visitors every year! The “Rock’n’Roll” is probably the most well-known bar in Skiathos town. It is a small slightly worn bar by the harbour, where the guests sit on cushions or bean bags in the street, enjoying their cocktails while they are watching the residents passing by.
Days 4th & 5th: Skopelos Island
Today, you will be travelling towards Skopelos Island. Eye-catching landscapes, azure waters on golden coasts, traditional Pelion architecture, rugged natural monuments and a pure island atmosphere are all essential elements of one of the greenest island in Greece. Chora, on the northern coast, is the capital of the island, which nestles comfortably on a hill and sprawls around a castle. The medieval castle with its sweeping views of the Aegean, the stone houses with picture-perfect courtyards, narrow paved streets and a number of Byzantine churches, complete the picture of a traditional Greek settlement.
Agioli restaurant with Mediterranean cuisine and creative dishes is worth-while visiting, in addition with Anna’s restaurant where you should not miss out the cheese pie with strawberries & almonds! The bar Bardon which is located at the old facilities of the olive oil Corporation with warehouses and mills, is a must in the area where the postindustrial aesthetics “meet” the historic architectural style!
Day 6th: Athens
Return back to Athens. On this last day, take the chance to explore regions of the city that you haven’t visited on your first day, buy souvenirs & local products to take back home!
The “core” of the historical centre is Plaka neighbourhood, which has been inhabited without interruption since antiquity. You will encounter ancient monuments, such as the Roman Agora, true masterpiece of Byzantine art and architecture, as well as remnants of the Ottoman period. There are also some interesting museums with Folk Art, Popular Musical Instruments etc, lots of traditional tavernas, cafés, bars, as well as shops selling souvenirs and traditional Greek products for yourself and also for gifts. The Greek Parliament Building and in front of it the Monument of the Unknown Soldier, guarded by the Evzones in traditional outfit is dominating at Syntagma Square. At this square starts the beautiful National Garden, south of which stands the impressive Zappeion Mansion.
