Dizzying heights, white-sand beaches and gritty city life: When you visit Rio de Janeiro, it’s easy to see how the breathtaking views—dotted with landmark sites like the Christ the Redeemer statue and the lesser-known Escadaria Selarón—make it an ideal vacation spot and bucket list destination. Travel to Rio de Janeiro to experience world-class art museums, a vast array of top-notch restaurants, and the signature joie de vivre of the Cariocas, those enviable residents of the city. Not to mention beaches so beautiful and well-loved they’ve inspired eponymous songs—”Girl From Ipanema” and “Copacabana,” anyone? While Rio’s long been famous for its annual Mardi Gras festival, Carnival, the rest of the year offers great shopping and gorgeous mountain scenery.
Circle the lagoa at dusk– Run, walk, hire a tandem or pedal a swan boat around Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, known to everyone as simply the lagoa, for one of the simplest but most pleasant evenings you can spend in Rio. Stop along the 7.4km course way for fresh coconut juice, a cold chope (draught beer) or an evening meal at one of the lakeside restaurants
Picnic on the Dois Irmãos– Rio is a city of spectacular views, but few can match the vista from the Dois Irmãos (Two Brothers) mountain, which looks down over Ipanema and Leblon and out to the Atlantic horizon.
Have a sundowner on the Urca seawall– It has been called Rio’s Malecón, but that does not do justice to the sea wall on the Urca peninsula, where crowds gather outside Bar Urca (which does great salgadinhos, or snacks) every Friday night to watch the sun go down behind Christ the Redeemer on the Corcovado, then drink and talk into the early hours.
Samba at Pedra do Sal– Pedra do Sal in the former slave quarter in Rio de Janeiro, considered to be the origin of samba music in Brazil. This is hallowed ground – a former centre of the slave trade that later became home to a liberated “Little Africa”, a quilombola community and many of Brazil’s finest musicians.
Wander up Selarón’s mosaic stairway in Lapa– One of Rio’s most beautiful, sad and mysterious stories of recent times was the death of Chilean artist Jorge Selarón, who decorated a stairway in Lapa with mirrors, mosaics and ceramic tiles.
Christ the Redeemer– This iconic landmark is a must-see attraction in Rio. Recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, this statue of Jesus Christ stands with arms outstretched to the city from above Corcovado Mountain’s staggering 2,330-foot elevation.
Tijuca National Park– Outdoorsy types love exploring this expansive green rainforest. Covering 8,300 acres, Tijuca National Park is the largest urban rainforest on the planet. The natural beauty of the park can’t be understated: it features varied terrains, waterfalls, more than 1,600 plant species and more than 350 different species of mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles.
Stroll among the bromeliads at Jardim Botânico-Tropical vegetation covers a pagoda at the Botanical Gardens in Rio De Janeiro Brazil.
