Despite the tourist development of the region, this village continues to be one of the most traditional settlements of Santorini, while there are still houses built into the rocks, known as “carved”. There is a quiet beach with distinctive black sand and crystal clear waters to swim! Return to the hotel in the late afternoon for rest.
Later on, you will be driving up to Pyrgos, where “Santo Wines” is located, a vineyard and a winery, where the characteristic varieties of Assyrtiko, Athiri, Aidani are produced, while adjacent to it, is the Wine Tourism Centre with a view of the volcano and the caldera. You will have the opportunity to watch a short film about the history of wine-making at the vineyard & do some food & wine matching overlooking the sunset… there is also a store where local theran products are being sold such as cherry tomatoes, fava beans, wild caper, caper leaves…
Finishing from there, you may walk around the village, which was the capital of Santorini at the time of the recurrent pirate raids, while at the top the ruins of a Venetian castle still exist. Small narrow alleys, cobbled streets, white cubic houses & many churches that make up the unique atmosphere of the area. Do not forget to pass by the oldest church, Theotokaki, dated back from the 10th century. Drive back to the lodge.
